Our Story
In 2020 during the pandemic, Kaia thought about her mentor Garry Shandling’s advice, “Give more. Give what you didn’t get. Love more.” She decided to mentor 3 young women writers. She had been a development exec on the movies JUST FRIENDS with Ryan Reynolds, and THE GOOD NIGHT with Gwyneth Paltrow, and so she’d sat through a lot of pitches as a buyer. She wanted to give back to the writing community. To her surprise, her tweet about her mentorship opportunity went viral on Twitter, and she had 250 applications from women writers all over the world.
As the applications poured in, Kaia found there are writers and creatives at every level of the industry who don’t feel supported, and have a lot of unanswered questions about how the business side of the entertainment business works. So she founded the group Writing with Kaia to help lower the velvet rope, and open her own Rolodex to bring in special guests. Kaia hosts “Secret Knock Calls” to talk to industry pros about their experiences, successes, struggles and things they wish they knew starting out with a live Q&A for writers.
As requests for training about the business side of entertainment kept coming in, Kaia created the Entertainment Business School for above-the-line professionals. The beta cohort of EBS filled in 2 days, and Kaia worked with the students over 12 weeks to develop a significant flagship program that addresses all your burning questions about having a life-long, fulfilling career in entertainment.
More programs have been developed to support students, and now there are both an Intro to EBS, as well as an e-course called Entertainment Business Mastery.
With Kaia’s values of prosperity, community, inclusion and kindness at the fore, the Entertainment Business School was founded as a safe space for entertainment business creatives to get training on these imperative business skills, and learn how to avoid career-killer mistakes.
